Yesterday, my wife and I had to put down our dog Poka who was struggling with late stage cancer. It was an incredibly difficult decision, and of course we are still processing our emotions.
That said, we find comfort in knowing we aren’t the first family to have to lose a pet, or a loved one.
Many times, when terrible things happen to us, we retreat into pretending we are the first to have ever experienced heartbreak etc.
But the reality is, most things have happened thousands if not millions of times across human history.
Losing a parent, a sibling, or a child.
Losing your job.
Suffering an injury or getting sick.
Knowing all of this doesn’t make the pain go away, but it does at the very least provide comfort. You aren’t alone.
