The Power of Specific

While working hard on my A Boundless World Travel guide, I’ve also spent a decent amount of my time devouring everything Ramit Sethi

I was introduced to his material several years back, right about the time I became interested in personal fiance. His book I Will Teach You To Be Rich is easily one of the best guides for those just getting into the finance world.

I can say without a doubt he has saved me several thousand dollars of my future income because of how much he taught me about the importance of good credit.

What I like about Ramit is he doesn’t just talk about finance, but instead dives deep into the psychological barriers that many of us face.He likes to call the beliefs that drive us invisible scripts, because all too often they run our lives without us having even the slightest knowledge the exist.

I was watching a video of his today and he was discussing how essential it is to be specific in the career world. At first, I simply brushed it off as “duh that’s obvious..” but it didn’t hit me until later how many of us really miss the boat.

Think about it.

You want to change the world. You want to lose weight. You want to work at a job with good pay.

You want to get good grades. You want to find a decent girl. You want to write a book.

We live in a world of generalities.

But… and here’s the important part, those who consciously choose to be specific are the ones that launch up to the loft of greatness.

Specific opens the lock to the door of opportunity.

It sounds so simple, yet the effects are so profound.

I want to change the world by moving to Haiti and using my knowledge of medicine to help sick infants who’s mothers have passed away.

I want to lose 20 pounds in 60 days by eating a predominantly healthy diet and walking hour every day 5 days a week.

I want a job in tech world that enables me to pay my bills and support my family, while allowing me to travel severals weeks of the year.

See the difference?

So often we whine and complain when life doesn’t serve us the correct meal, forgetting that by simply tweaking our order we can have literally anything on the menu.

So my question to you: What do you want?

Hey man. Thanks for stopping by. I've lost a lot of my blogging mojo over the past few months and am slowly looking to get back into it.. so I'll be sure to post more on Twitter. :) Yeah man. Just do your very best to be more specific and opportunities will start knocking.

Bud, I'm glad to see you keeping up with things here, although I wish you would share this stuff more frequently on twitter :). You're a good writer and I always enjoy talking to you. Now, on to what you've mentioned here. I honestly think this has been one of the reasons I've struggled with this job search. "I want a job in social media" is a bit broad, and truth be told, part of what I've wrestled with is what I want to do next, but I already took Ramit's free material and have setup 3 meetings for info interviews with people in my network. So here's to getting specific and taking action.
