The Four Letter Verb That Will Change Your Life Forever

by Bud on February 19, 2009

What is the four letter verb that can change your life forever?

I’m going to hold the suspense for just a wee bit longer. But in the mean time I can provide you with some clues :)

Ready?

It is recommended you do this four letter word for a minimum of one hour each day.

You can do it anyplace at anytime. Although it can be difficult to do in the dark.

You can do it on the beach. On a plane. Or even in a car (assuming your not driving.)

My personal favorite place is the hot tub :)

It is visually engaging.

With variety this never gets old.

Depending on the quality, it can put you to sleep.

Quality is more important than length.

At climax, you could be left in tears.

There are groups in which you get together  and discuss your personal experiences.

This declines exponentially after graduating college.

The more skilled you are, the more enjoyable it is.

Most married couple’s have little time to do this.

Do this and your life will instantly transform for the better :)

Are you ready for me to reveal the life changing four letter verb?

Drum role please…

The four letter word is..

READ

Now I’m going to ignore the fact that the majority of my blog readers are a bunch of dirty-minded-individuals and proceed with today’s incredibly important post.

Why read?

If you are looking to profoundly change your life perhaps one of the most important things you can do is begin reading. In my opinion, one of the most discouraging things about today’s society is the lack of desire to read.

“I don’t have time.”

“All books are boring.”

” Reading corrupts our minds!”

Ok, so I don’t think too many people say that last one, yet nonetheless the excuses roll on and on.

I’ll be frank. Reading does take some time. But the benefits far out weigh the small amount of time it requires. Think of how many hours of T.V you watch, most of which is complete and utter trash. Reading stimulates your mind and is a terrific form of meditation (Ok so I was hoping to have a cool little link to go to if you clicked on mediation, but I have yet to write a post about it. I was too busy reading.) I digress.

Reading unleashes the creative beast that lay dormant inside of you. It motivates. It inspires. It strengthens the muscles of your mind. There is no greater feeling that getting lost in a wonderful book. One of my main goals this year is to begin reading more. I am personally into the personal development genre but I also enjoy reading an inspiring book of fiction. I love the rich detail in which my mind becomes lost in.

Over the last year I have read nearly 50 books. Some life changing. Others solid. And some that I will  soon forget. However, within the past year I have grown unbelievably. My mind has expanded. I have been introduced to various perspectives in which I otherwise would not have been. Through reading I have learned to assimilate the empowering concepts in which I have read and disregard the one’s in which are useless.

The quality of my life has sky-rocketed since I have begun reading more often. Has my life changed? Not at all, but the perspective in which I view my shortcomings and my setbacks sure have. Getting a bad grade on my paper seems nothing compared to the sufferings of the monster in Frankenstein. My feelings of loneliness are greatly overshadowed by the isolation in which Holden Caulfield felt. What are you fueling your mind with? Worthless T.V or a wonderful novel?

Perhaps the most important benefit of reading lies in the inspiration in which it gives us. In getting lost in a book we are reminded that we are indeed the  author’s of ourselves. We can at will, add, delete, or modify any page in which we create. We can expand upon the already wonderful novel in which we have crafted. In our grasp, we have a plethora of literary techniques at our disposal. One’s in which we can use to fortify our novel’s purpose. We don’t have to hit the publish button until we are absolutely satisfied with the work in which we create.

I challenge you to find the time to read. I challenge you to let your imagination run free. I challenge you to dare to dream. Find a novel. Let your worries go. Enjoy.

And seriously.. Get your mind out of the gutter :)

I think that Love also could fit within the same concept, since you have to love what your doing in order to succeed and love also means passion which is important success factor.

Though, i like it, good job my friend ;)

I think it was Steven King who said he carries a book around wherever he goes and reads every chance he gets. Waiting in the checkout line? He can read a page or two. Getting his car washed? Maybe an entire chapter.

I wish I was that diligent, but I do try to read on a daily basis, as I find the process of learning that way to be much more permanent than watching the television. It will change your life and alter your view of the universe.

Great post Bud! I love to read. I have two book shelves full of books that I’ve read and have a large pile of unread books waiting for my attention. I find and buy books faster than I can read them. ;) I’ve gained so much knowledge from books that it’s undoubtedly made a significant difference in my life.

By the way, I like your new theme!

Haha! That post was fun to read, specially the drum rolling thing! lol…and informative.

Yep, I agree that reading really changes ones’ lives, living is learning…and by reading we learn more, although do not forget that our experiences and emotions teaches us more.

Hi Bud

I wonder how can blog readers object to reading books… allergic to paper? :)

Yet sadly, it does happen

This was great! I love books and am a voracious reader and my eyes are bigger than my time. I have 30 or 40 new books on my shelves waiting to be read.

This article was clever and right on target. Do you have an email subscription option?
