Stick To What You Know

by Bud on September 4, 2010

You have to stand out. You have to be remarkable. We hear something along those lines every day. The consequences? Nothing short of disastrous.

I’m all for being the best you can be, but that extra pressure to be perfect often hits us where it hurts. And I hate being hit.

Perceptions distorted, we compare ourselves to others. Suddenly we aren’t qualified enough. Soon we no longer know enough. Then we find ourselves writing and talking about things we could careless about; worse topics we know nothing of.

I’ve been there, and I know how it shitty it feels. It’s not right yet that’s unfortunately how many operate.

We all have holes. We all have dents in our armor. No hero is invulnerable. So please stop pretending.

The problem doesn’t lie in not knowing enough or being enough. The problem starts with thinking perfection is valuable. Remarkable has nothing to do with perfection, it has to do with letting your shields down. It has to do with creating beauty even when you’re scared.

We are all already in a perfect state. We colour it with our perceptions and comparisons like you say.

Love to give yourself regardless of what else is going on. The ocean doesn’t reject rain even though it already has so much water. Neither will life reject us.

Ah, the old personal development conundrum: truly being yourself in light of everyone telling you to.

I believe there comes a time in people’s lives when they choose to STOP listening to everyone around them and just be themselves. It’s like that full step from being a follower into a leader.

When that happens, they stop trying to ‘be themselves’ or ‘be remarkable’ or any of that. They just do it. Because they want to. Because they know in their heart of hearts that by following someone else’s ideal, they are just being a slave, just as they were before.

As a person who tells people what to do (as a blogger), the challenge is how do you force accountability on the readers, rather than have them listen to you forever? Some people are going to outgrow this stuff, and that’s great! I just want them to outgrow it FASTER.

Envisioning perfection is okay by me, as it helps set a course and you have something to reach for, but it’s also important to know that imperfection is a perfect expression of being human, and it’s something we need to embrace and celebrate along the way.

@Brett: You’re so right man. We all are at different points in our lives. The best part is when you start living through yourself.
