On my campus there’s an infamous Christian preacher by the name of brother Jed. While passing by his favorite speaking spot, it’s not uncommon to hear “You’re going to hell” or ” You’re doomed.” Some call him extreme. And I agree.
On any given day the crowd generally tops a hundred students plus, all of which are surprisingly engaged.
His polarizing performance draws heated comments from the crowd. Yet he stands tall in his battle ground. For he believes.
On my campus there is also a few lesser known preachers. They recite a few bible passes and offer an occasional rebuke to the few students passing by. Their crowd tops a dozen people max. Their mission is the same.
To the average person Brother Jed is an extremist and nothing more.
But the hundreds of letters he receives from all over the country tell a different tale.
A typical letter might say, “When I went to school I used to hate you…. but you made me think. And I thank you for that. I’m a much kinder person these days.” These kinds of letters aren’t uncommon.
Regardless of your spiritual beliefs there is a message to be learned.
Telling people what they want to hear doesn’t provoke change. Instead, it constructs a false reality. And falsehood tends to prevent full on metamorphosis.
If you’re looking to remodel, quit gravitating to the world views that strengthen your most used lens. Challenge your ideals instead. Push yourself to grow. Dive into the stream of uncomfortable.
Real change occurs when your expectations are shattered. Then and only then.
