The other day, after I finished downloading the new mac operating system Lion, I discovered that the track pad scrolling had been reversed.

“What the hell? This is weird” I thought to myself. I tried to scroll up, and my screen would scroll down. I tried to scroll down, and my screen would scroll up.

I was uncomfortable. I was out of place.

Less than an hour later however, I had already adapted to the new way of scrolling, and if were I to revert to my old ways, I would likely feel just as alienated as I felt before.

There’s a lesson embedded in the silly likes of a trackpad.

As humans we change a lot. And that change often brings discomfort. We don’t like it. We dread it. We fear it.

But despite our every hope to avoid change, it continues to happen. Our lives continues to evolve.

In the initial stage, it’s common to think that you will never adapt. That you will never get used to your new world.

But if there is one thing the human race is good at, it’s our ability to flow with the wind.

Break up with a significant other? Change careers? Move to a foreign land?

I’d like to take a few moments to tie up a few odds and ends.

First off: Bud’s Book Box:

I like to read.. and I like to share what I learn. Hence the idea was born.

The plan is for me to read 3-4 books a month and provide detailed notes to those who subscribe. This pushes me to consume the information in a way that will benefit both me and you, rather than just me reading for the sake of reading. The scope of my box is mostly non-fiction but I’ll share my thoughts on anything that I deem worthy.

I’m a firm believer that reading is a personal experience, so by no means do I think my notes are the end all. Furthermore, I recommend you read the book for yourself as well if it looks like a good fit. I know some people are too busy to weed out the less than stellar books, so my service might be a good fit for some.

Just as I’ll be happy to share the books I enjoy, I’ll be quick to note the books I don’t find worthy as well. I’ll also share my take on some of the more profound documentaries/videos I watch.

The catch?

I’ll be experimenting with the service lettrly and charging 10 dollars a month. I don’t plan on raising the rates for a good while so there’s no false pressure to join when the service opens. It will remain 10 dollars a month for at least 6 months so take your time in deciding if it’s right for you.

Ideally, I’d like to see the service hit 100+ subscribers. That would be sufficient for me to buy a few more books and maybe take a dent out of my rent. So if you do enjoy it please do spread the word.

Obviously Bud’s Book Box isn’t going to be a right fit for everyone. In fact, it’s honestly just an experiment. Right now I intend to launch the service early July so if you’re interested keep your eyes open and don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. If you have any books you think I should take a look at feel free to get in touch as well.

At 10 bucks a month I feel it’s a reasonable price for those who enjoy reading, and there will also be some secret goodies involved. As the service grows, I intend to send out some free hardcover books at the end of each month, as well as do a UStream where we chat about our favorite books.

If you’re a fan of Garyvee I think you might enjoy the first month’s prize.

Less Consuming More Trench Work

I’m sure you’ve noticed that the posts here at A Boundless World have been a little shorter than usual. I’ve been experimenting with the shorter writing style for a variety of reasons.

One, if I’m writing shorter work I have no excuse as to why I can’t share my thoughts on a subject. Number two, I’m trying to become more efficient in the way I share my ideas. Obviously, if I have more to say I’ll say it, but for now I’m finding quite a flow with the short and powerful punch.

For the past few years I’ve spent a great amount of time consuming material and I’m at the point where I’m trying to consume less and do more trench work. This means facing my fears and charging for my premium work.

This means that I continue to get my name out in the online world by doing interviews and guest posts. This means I continue the transition from blogging as a hobby to creating a sustainable online business.

Contrary to popular belief, I’ve made very little money on the internet up to this point and I’m hoping to change that. My ultimate goal is to support myself through a variety of online projects. Some of which I’ll be talking more about soon.

Want a Guest Post or Interview?

As I mentioned, I’m trying to step up my internet presence by doing a variety of interviews and guest posts. If you think I’d be a good fit for your website feel free to get in touch. It doesn’t matter how big or small your audience is, we can work something out!

Facebook Update:

Over the next week or so I’ll be working away at creating a Facebook page for A Boundless World. A lot of my readers add me on my personal page, and while I appreciate the gesture I’m trying to cut back the friends on my personal account. I’d much prefer my personal page to be as intimate as possible with people I for the most part, know in real life.

This has nothing to do with whether I feel your friendship worthy, I simply don’t want my personal account to become cluttered to the point of no use.

Please don’t take offense if you find you’re no longer my friend on my personal account. I promise I’ll be using the A Boundless World page just as much to communicate with you all.

A Big Thanks

I just want to take a quick moment and say thank you! Whether it be the hundreds of emails you all send or the comments you all leave, I’m very grateful. What I do wouldn’t be nearly as rewarding if weren’t for you! A Boundless World is over two years old and I feel like I’m just getting started.

In the upcoming days I’ll be posting a survey here so I can learn more about what you guys would like to see here at A Boundless World

I know this post has been rather personal, but I’d love to hear what you are working on! Please share in the comments below!

As always I’d love to hear from you. So come say hello.

Today I’m leaving for Shanghai China where I’ll spend a month or so with my family. I also intend to travel to Nepal to see where my little sister is from. China has been pretty sticky on what can be viewed there so I’ll likely be quiet on the social media front.

In late June I’ll head back to the states and likely travel to California, Houston, and Missouri. If you’d like to meet up don’t hesitate to contact me!

I have a ton planned over the next few months and I’m excited to share those plans with you! It’s well worth the wait!

It’s been relatively quiet here at A Boundless World over the last month or so and I’d just like to take a moment to update everyone on where I currently stand.

While there wasn’t one specific reason for the month long hiatus, I did take the time off to reevaluate my priorities and goals, a process I felt to be particularly rewarding. I’ve also spent a great deal of time reading and reflecting. For the record, I’m not gone for good and I fully intend for A Boundless World to continue to flourish but perhaps in a slightly different direction.

While this blog has been primary personal development for the majority of its life, I’m looking to expand in other areas of the internet world. Quite honestly, writing simple tips on how to live a better life has become boring for me. There’s certainly nothing wrong with blogs that follow path, but at this point in time I’m looking to continue to push myself as a person and writer.

My current direction involves me reasserting myself in the online world and sharing my insights on entrepreneurship and making a difference. I’ll be running with a few ideas I have and see where they take me. For the last half year or so I’m been admittedly flaky in pursuing my online goals and I’ve recently realized I need to step my game up. This starts with me working hard on the many online relationships I’ve let slip.

Currently I’m in the planning stages of a few projects I’m quite excited about. One has to do with fitness, and the other has to do with having conversations that matter. The latter is a project I’m particularly looking forward to and deeply believe in the difference it will make. Hint: It involves roof top conversations!

As University winds down for the summer, I have yet to decide on my summer plans. It will likely involve a combination of Shanghai, New York, Texas, and or Missouri. I’ll be sure to keep you updated as I’d love to meet up with as many readers I possibly can.

With all that said, I’m really excited on what’s to come and I thank you for tagging along.

A confession. The last year and a half have been in many ways anything but boundless. I’ve struggled with the transition to college. I’ve been my own worst enemy. And I’ve felt lost. I’ve broken up with writing only to remember how much joy she brought me. I’ve sold out to please people who I had no business pleasing.

I’ve been plagued by inconsistencies and for a while I believed I didn’t care. My quest to be epic illuminated the holes I pretended to ignore. In nearly every area of my life I’ve over promised and under delivered, beating myself up along the way. I’ve sacrificed my health and turned my back on the sure tell signs. Tuition was expensive but lessons were plentiful.

Though at times the rain clouds have left me damp, I’ve certainly had my fair share of good moments over the last year and half as well. I’ve made dozens of new friends, strengthened my spiritual life, and deepened my relationship with myself. I opened the fear gym, connected with a handful of amazing bloggers, and continued my transition into the world of adulthood. I’ve gained focus, and increased clarity, and in the process reinforced what it is that I intend to do.

I’ve been inconsistent here over the past months because I’ve been afraid. It’s not easy for me to admit that, but that’s the honest to God truth. The fears that have plagued me don’t matter. What matters is where we go from here. It’s far too easy to get caught in the storm of the past, when it’s just as easy to choose an alternative path, exactly what I intend to do.

Some people are afraid to admit when the dice don’t roll their way. And some people take the act of complaining too far. But there’s something valuable in showing yourself at your weakest, for even when you’re weak, your beauty still shines.

We see and hear so many amazing stories of people doing great things that soon we forget that we ourselves are great. Soon we forget that we ourselves have something amazing to offer. Soon we forget that we aren’t just a statistic. You. Me. We matter.

For the last year I’ve been living in my head afraid to offer my gifts to the world, pretending I’m not good enough to contribute anything of value. The time for letting my fears shackle me as has passed. It’s time for me to own my fears. I’ll still face them of course, but the difference now is who will come out victorious.

The trials and tribulations of the past have led me to discover what I’m made of; who I am.

I’m a writer. I’m a person that cares. Being shieldless brings me alive. Conversation keeps me warm.

I love giving back even if no one ever knows. I’m confident but insecure. I’m lazy but a good challenge turns me on. I’m not authentic. I’m me. This is me.

I’m prepared to own this year and I can do this damnit. No one, including myself, will stop me.

For those currently struggling in their own life plane remember life goes on. There’s more to life than hiding in fear. The sun will rise again.

The world is once again boundless. Choose your path and walk. There’s no excuse to why you can’t take the leap. Join me in paving greatness in the world.

It’s good to be back.

There’s no better feeling than pouring your heart and soul into a creative piece of work and having thousands of people view your work. When my post on why the education system was failing went viral I literally couldn’t sleep from excitement. It’s a great feeling knowing that people all over the world have consumed your work.

Viral doesn’t just extend to the written word. There are viral videos, campaigns, and a variety of other combinations. Create a piece of viral work and the world stops: all eyes on you.

Ask any blogger how to create a successful blog and the majority will tell you that you need to make posts that go viral. Fair enough.

Yet with all the credit viral gets, many conveniently forget to discuss the negative implications of viral.

The majority of what goes viral is complete bullshit.

Perhaps you’ve noticed that the quality of what goes viral is generally pretty suspect. Not all viral posts are worthless of course, but a fair share of them could be written by my third grade sister.

I’ve certainly produced my fair share of low quality work. We all are at different levels in our creative career. I’m just as guilty as those who I’m calling out.

However, if you intend to better yourself as a writer and grow as a human being you must also accept a standard of higher quality work. You won’t always be able to produce at your best, but you can always choose to trash the scraps that you know shouldn’t be served at the table.

Why Viral Is Often Bullshit:

I rarely read an article that has been retweeted or liked millions of times.

Why?

Because people pass on what makes them comfortable. Think about the last viral post you read. Did it leave any lasting impact? Did it make you question your current beliefs? Or did you simply nod your head in agreement? Of course there are exceptions, but those are as rare as me studying for my accounting test.

Instead of reading to grow, many of us read to procrastinate. Instead of taking what we learn and implement it, we simply believe we are in a better position to succeed.

Creating something that goes viral isn’t bad. What I find concerning however, is the number of people who sacrifice quality for a few extra eyeballs. Obviously, there is a proper mixture of how to create value and spread the word, but too many people cut back on the most important ingredient.

There’s nothing wrong with raising awareness. There’s nothing wrong with reminding people of the many blessings we have. But when one gets caught in the endless cycle of delusion, our foundation of progress begins to crumble.

Liking shit on Facebook won’t cure cancer. Changing your picture to a cartoon won’t stop child abuse. Writing about 50 ways to smile won’t make anyone happier. Small moments may ultimately lead to a breakthrough, but you may as well aim for the fences from the get go.

Transforming yourself takes work. Real breakthroughs take time. Aim to make a difference.

If you do any creating in the online world please stop forsaking value for that small traffic spike. As a world changer your number one asset is the value you can produce, not how easily you can regurgitate the same old shit.

Viral and value aren’t synonymous. Remember that the next time you give birth to something in the online world.

I’ve been thinking a lot about what I want to do with my life lately, and it’s become increasingly obvious I have the case of what many call the sophomore blues.

Despite my impressive tagline to the right, I too struggle with motivation and keeping my momentum during turbulent times.

Externally my life is great. I have a solid group of friends, I’m attending a respectable university, I have a roof over my head, and smile frequently throughout day.

Yet the truth is, my heart remands bored. There’s abundance of possible explanations for this, but to be quite honest I don’t care about explanations. I much prefer results.

Projects and passions I once pursued with full force have been placed on the back burner. Instead of chasing my dreams I’ve just been getting by. It hurts to openly acknowledge this fact, as I pride myself in living large, but being honest with reality is the first to step to growth.

No doubt much of my boredom stems from fear. I have a plethora of ideas that I know will benefit not only me but those who are exposed to them. There’s dozens of amazing people whom I wish to connect further with to further expand our influence. And though I’ve been excited I’ve been passive at the same time.

This weekend I spent many hours reading, and while sitting on my balcony looking at the skyline, I was gently reminded that no one is going to save me. I’m responsible for the change I seek. If I’m not happy right now it’s up to me to change that. And for the first time in many months I’m committed to doing just that.

If you’re waiting to be saved you’re throwing your days away. It’s quit simple to sit and wait for a change of luck, it’s another to go out and create it. The latter requires courage, waiting doesn’t.

I’m not going to make any promises here on this blog that I can’t keep. I know exactly what it is I need to do to come alive once again. And I’ll be sharing my journey along the way.

A hiccup in the road isn’t the end of the world, turning back on what you’ve created however may as well be.

Here’s to stepping up. Here’s to fighting fear. Here’s to making the most out of every moment we have.

Here’s to kicking boredom’s ass.

It’s been about a month since I’ve been “back” here at A Boundless World and things seem to be going rather smoothly. I’ve been pleased with the progression especially as I’ve been working 40 hour weeks and taking two college courses online. 8 posts this month puts it at the third most active month since the site began which is pretty nice.

I’ve been pleased to hear how many people are glad that I’m back home and writing in my unique style. Quite honestly, I’m amazed at how much I was missed here, and knowing this keeps me humble.

One thing I’m hoping to accomplish here over the next few months is becoming more focused in what I write here at A Boundless World. That being said I’m looking for a nice tagline to go along with the A Boundless World theme. As of right now I have a few ideas but am really liking “A Boundless World: Breaking Limits of Marketing, Relationships, and Life.” Though I’m open to reader suggestions. I want to keep my focus a bit broad but at the same time I don’t want to be going all over the place.

This year I expect my online “business” to finally begin to take form, so I’ll be sure to share those experiences along the way. I’m also hoping to tackle some more in depth topics such as spirituality and relationships something I haven’t been able to do much of yet. While I’ll be running an occasional list post, my aim with this site is to go beyond just “tips” and have deep thought embedded within my words.

I’m intend to push myself as a writer which as you may know, involves taking risks and trying various styles. You may have noticed I’ve had a few very short, but powerful posts this past month along with an occasional lengthier one. When all is said and done I know you’re looking for value and I hope to provide that for you.

One thing I’ve also noticed is that I’ve been missing in action as far as commenting on other people’s blogs. This isn’t something I’ve done intentionally it just hasn’t been my main focus. I enjoy seeing up and coming bloggers see success as much as the next person and I quite honestly miss some of the connections I had when I was regularly on commenting blogs. I’m hoping to get back into the swing of things in a way that I’m able to connect but at the same time not going overboard.

Also I’ve been working very hard a little something I know you will dig. It won’t cost you a penny so I’m hoping you’ll stay tuned. Hint: If you’ve ever had your ass kicked by fear you might like this.

Goals for this next month:

1. Consistency
2. Tagline
3. Connect

What are you guys and gals up to? Anything exciting? Feel free to say hi.

Living in Shanghai has allowed me to experience many firsts, attending an international school, learning the Chinese language, and daily interaction with cultures from all over the world.

While each of these experiences have made me a much more conscious individual, there is another encounter that has made me grow tremendously.

Riding the subway in Shanghai.

The Subway

Today I decided to meet my father up for lunch as he soon leaves for a business trip and as you may have guessed, I’m taking the subway.

As a matter of fact, I’m writing this very post on my i-Phone.

When I first moved to Shanghai, the thought of taking the crowded transportation system intimidated me greatly. Fortunately, my good friend (and experienced subway rider) Mike, turned me on to the great benefits of riding the subway.

At first I rode the subway sparingly , but it wasn’t long before I became a regular user, especially when I visited my girlfriend in downtown Shanghai.

Because riding the subway was a simple way of saving money and it allowed me to reduce my carbon footprint, becoming a regular was a no brainier.

While it took a while to get used to, before long I actually started to rather enjoy riding the subway. Not only does taking the subway give me time to reflect but I also enjoy the interaction with the hundreds of people who ride the subway.

Connectedness

One of my favorite reasons for riding the subway is I can’t help but feel connected to humanity when I do.

I absolutely love the energy of the subway. Each day the energy is noticeably different. Sometimes it is negative, while other days I can’t help but feel the positivity of the passengers aboard.

I love experiencing the ups and downs of human emotion.

Riding the subway gives me the chance to fully immerse and connect with the thousands of people who use the subway daily.

While it can often times be crowded, I have come to thoroughly enjoy my time on the subway.

A positive habit I have adopted is to give my seat up to someone who looks as if they need it. Not only does this make me feel better but it also gives me an opportunity to make someone’s day.

I am regularly amazed at the politeness of (some) Chinese who gracefully refuse the seat.

(Ironically, I was just pushed out of the way by an elderly Chinese woman I kid you not.)

I love watching people interact with each other and am often greeted with smiles. I also enjoy watching the plethora of little kids I routinely come across.

I do my very best to smile at as many people as I can and sometimes start some small talk with some of the passengers ( my Chinese is still fairly weak.)

Many of my most euphoric moments have occurred during the walk home from the subway. This no doubt is the result of the connectedness I often feel when riding the subway.

Personal Development Express

Not only does riding the subway give me time to connect with humanity, I also use it as a time of growth.

Because I am often on the subway for 20-30 minutes, I quickly realized the potential of using the time to better myself as a human being.

Luckily, unlike when I’m in the car, I am able to read with out getting sick; therefore I take advantage of the 20-30 minutes and often read a book.

If I’m not feeling in the mood to read I also have enough time to fit in a 20 minute motivational podcast to boost my spirits. I often listen to a Philosopher Note or two.

I also sometimes take out my I-phone and jot ideas down for future posts.

Riding the subway often gives me sudden spurts of inspiration as well. I can’t tell you how many post ideas have come to me during a subway ride.

Taking the subway also gives me time to simply slow down. Sometimes I simply focus on my breathing and zone out. And while the subway isn’t quiet enough for me to experience full scale meditation, I occasionally listen to some meditation tunes.

I can’t tell you how valuable the 20-30 minute subway rides have benefited me as a person. I’ve written numerous articles, read an entire books (obviously in not one trip), and took sometime to contemplate some of lives most difficult questions.

The subway truly has been my personal development express.

Taking the subway

Having grown up in the suburbs of Texas it wasn’t often ( OK never) that I found myself taking the subway.

Living in Shanghai has really opened my eyes to how convenient taking the subway can be.

While I don’t always take the subway I do my very best to use it as often as possible.

Do you regularly use the subway? Or are you a subway virgin?

Assuming there is a subway near you, I highly suggest you give riding the subway a try.

First lets take care of some business shall we?

New Theme:

If you haven’t noticed ( you’d be crazy if you haven’t), my blog has been completely redesigned. The design was done by David Wright (better known as Blogger Dad.) He also runs the blog I Draw Comics as well as coauthors the blog Collective Inkwell. Not only does the design look professional but it’s simplicity stands out and fits my blog perfectly. I can honestly say he is Thesis master.

David specializes in Thesis design, so if you’re looking for a wonderful custom Thesis design, I can happily recommend him. You can contact him here.

This design is here to stay and I couldn’t be happier with the way it looks. If you’re reading this, thanks again David it was a pleasure working with you.

Graduation:

Now for something even more important:

As of last Thursday, I officially entered the transition between being a senior in high school and a freshman in college. I will be attending Mizzou this fall.

Aside from the many goodbyes I’ve had to say over the past few days, I couldn’t be happier. Graduation was sweet

Summer Plans:

I expect my summer to be very busy. Starting the 20th my friend from Texas will be visiting followed by another buddy of mine on the 26th. The three of us are like brothers so I’m excited to see them. It’s the first time either of them have been out of the country (USA), so it will be interesting to see how they react to the wonderful city of Shanghai.

Not only are my two friends visiting, my summer to do list is almost over flowing. I have a bunch of projects I wish to start, as well as about two dozen books I wish to read. Because I’ll be doing a lot of reading, you can expect I will have a lot of material to contemplate and reflect on , which means more blog posts! I also plan on setting a week or two aside, to finally go through my photoreading course.

Because one of my buddies also likes to meditate, we might also take a quick trip into the Chinese mountains. It should be fun.

Although I’ve been in Shanghai for two years, I have yet to visit Beijing so that’s definitely something me and my friends will do. If time permits we might also take a quick trip to Hong Kong. I expect to be doing a lot of traveling, so that means a lot of pictures.

My friends will be staying with me until July 9th so we will have plenty of time for some fun.

The Future of A Boundless World:

Although I’ll be busy traveling with my friends, you can still expect to see two or three posts a week. And if you find me slacking off I expect to see some emails holding me accountable. I take this blog very seriously.

Over the next few months I plan on writing an e-book, one that I know my loyal fans will love. Pull out your credit card and toss it aside because this beauty won’t cost a thing.

I’m super excited to be bringing you such a powerful e-book that I know will be of tremendous benefit too you. As I’m of right now it’s still in the planning stages but If you have any suggestions for topics you’d like to see covered in the e-book, just head over to the contact page and let me know.

As of right now it looks like the title will be :

A Boundless World
Consciously Creating
The Life of Your Dreams

I will be putting a lot of time and effort into the making of this free e-book over the next few months and I know you will find it valuable. Many e-book’s today are drowned in hype and filler, but I can safely say my e-book will not be fluff free.

Not only am I working on the e-book, I also expect to be doing a few interviews with some top notch personal development bloggers to give you a more complete perspective of the topics this blog discusses. If you would like to be interviewed for A Boundless World just send me an email through the contact page.

Over the next few months I also plan on ramping up my guest posts to get my name and my blog out into the bloggersphere. The infancy stage of this blog is no more. If you would like me to contribute a guest post or interview send me an email. Provided your blog has more than a handful of readers I’m likely to comply.

Although I won’t be on the computer as much as I normally am, I will still read your comments and respond to your emails daily.

Because the conversations with my friends tend to be highly philosophical, expect my posts to follow suit. If you’ve thought my past posts were deep, you haven’t seen anything yet. I hope you don’t get offended very easily because my purpose is to help you grow.

I also plan to begin monetizing this blog in the near future, but I’ll leave those details for another post.

Just thought I’d keep you guys in the loop with what’s going on. I’m really excited about seeing this site bloom to it’s full potential. I can honestly say, it’s only the beginning. After all we do live in A Boundless World
